Teachers should combine Fundations with a wide variety of text experiences and expose students to poetry and narrative and informational text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>By the end of Level K, students will be able to:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Recognize and produce rhyming words<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Segment words in a spoken sentence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Segment words into syllables<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Segment and pronounce initial, medial, and final phonemes in spoken CVC words<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Manipulate phonemes with additions or substitutions in one-syllable words<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Name all letters of the alphabet<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Write all manuscript letters in lowercase and uppercase<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sequence letters of the alphabet<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fluently produce sounds of consonants (primary) and short vowels when given the letter<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fluently produce sounds for basic digraphs (wh, sh, ch, th, ck)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Name and write corresponding letter(s) when given sounds for consonants, consonant digraphs, and short vowels<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Distinguish long and short vowel sounds within words<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Read and spell approximately 200 CVC words<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spell other words phonetically, drawing on knowledge of sound-letter relationships<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify 75% of first 100 high frequency words, including 25\u201330 Trick Words (high frequency words) such as the, was, of<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify and name correct punctuation at end of sentence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Capitalize the first letter of people\u2019s names and of words at the beginning of sentences<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Name the author and illustrator of a story and define their roles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Explain narrative story structure including character, setting, and main events<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use a combination of drawing and dictating to narrate linked events to tell about a story in sequence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Retell key details of narrative and informational text, using pictures or prompts as a guide<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify characters, settings, and main events in a story, with pictures or other prompts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Describe what happened in a story when given a specific illustration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>With prompts, compare and contrast the experiences of characters in two stories<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Explain the differences between narrative and informational text<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Echo-read a passage with correct phrasing and expression<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify and explain new meanings for familiar words and newly taught words<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Produce and expand complete sentences in shared language activities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Curriculum Overview Level K Fundations provides early learners with a structured literacy approach to develop sound- and word-level skills so they progress into proficient readers and writers.
